10h30    12h00 - Théâtre municipal What's Next: The Age of Anger
Théâtre municipal In the pipeline Professionals only

The Age of Anger, an adaptation of Nando López's novel of the same name, purports to be a naturalistic and, at the same time, poetic portrait of today's adolescence. The main character is Marcos (17), who we dissect along four episodes through the eyes of four characters who know him very well: his "girlfriend" Sandra, his older brother Ignacio, his friend Raúl and his tutor Irene.
When Marcos's father is killed, everything points to him. But has he been able to do something so dreadful? Who's really Marcos?

Case study with Nando Lopez (Writer), Javier Pons (Executive Producer, Globomedia), Mireia Nando Javier and Montse Garcia (Head of drama, Atresmedia TV), Jesús Rodrigo (Director).

Théâtre municipal Discussions Professionals only

With Conecta FICTION

Spain and France have a long tradition of working together on audiovisual projects, especially in the field of cinema, but more than ever, collaboration between these two European countries is booming for television content. These collaborations are established at all levels: from the development of projects, to their financing through co-production agreements, the adaptation of formats of successful series, broadcasting on different television screens, or even strategic agreements at the business level.

At a time when alliances are essential in a very competitive global scenario, we will analyse what are the keys to making these collaborations bear fruitful: how to adapt great series to totally different audiences, how to cross cultural barriers within co-production, how to direct sales to such disparate audiences, how to co-finance, etc…

Speakers:

Alexandre Piel (ARTE, Franco-Spanish co-production "Hierro")

Fernando Navarro (screenwriter of "La cosmética del enemigo" adapted from French novel by Amélie Nothomb)

Asserting your rights as an author

For authors, getting their rights recognised or finding solutions to conflicts or disagreements can be a difficult task. However, there is no shortage of structures dedicated to their defence: SACD, AMAPA, trade unions and professional organisations, etc. All too often authors get discouraged and give up on their defence.

How, then, can we simplify the path to better protection for authors? What recourses exist? How can we create conditions that allow them to devote all their energy to creation? Initiated by the SACD, this meeting will provide answers to help authors see clearly and assert their rights.

“The French don't know how to make believable, deep and spectacular 'historical' series": myth or reality?

Since the start of the ORTF, and then in the 80s and 90s, French television developed a real tradition of historical drama. One might have the impression that that tradition was forgotten in order to breathe some new life into them. This ambitious genre, appreciated by the public and creators, is of considerable importance in the television landscape. Our neighbours, particularly the Anglo-Saxons, produce a colossal amount of them, often with great talent and impressive budgets.

What is the situation in France today? With some of those who have ventured into this field - with success - we will discuss the specific challenges of writing, directing and producing historical series. Why talk about the past? To what extent can we remain faithful to reality? How to avoid the "period drama" or historical trap? And how to succeed in the production challenge that is an ambitious historical drama?

A discussion under the patronage of the U2R union (Union des réalisatrices et réalisateurs).

Chaired by Arnaud Malherbe (screenwriter and director)

With Iris Bucher (producer, Quad - Le Bazar de la charité, Les Combattantes), Emmanuel Daucé (producer, Tetra Media Fiction - Un Village français, Paris Police 1900), David Hourrègue (director, Germinal), Marie Roussin (screenwriter, Mixte), Ophélia Kolb (actress).

In the post #metoo era, the need to create safe, fair and dignified conditions for all those involved in filming intimate scenes is a given. "Intimacy coordination" has become a key concern on British sets and one that is still under-addressed in the rest of Europe.

Since 2014, Ita O'Brien has been a pioneer in this field, and has developed a set of "good practices" that have been widely adopted and praised by the industry as well as associations. She has played a key role in some of the most iconic series in recent years, from Sex Education and Normal People to I May Destroy You. A role to which the creator of the latter, Michaela Coel, paid a vibrant tribute at the last BAFTA ceremony: "Thank you for your existence in our industry. For making the space safe [...]".

We will have the honour of giving the floor to Ita O'Brien in a hybrid session, chaired by Emilie Gavoille.

VP Executive Producer, Drama Development - HBO Europe (Royaume-Uni / UK)

From Eastern Europe to Spain and Scandinavia, HBO Europe is finding bold writers and projects and producing ambitious work that has the "HBO sauce" whilst still being able to be resolutely local.
We are pleased to be handing the microphone to Steve Matthews, who plays a key role in this creative boom as he oversees the development of HBO Europe series. His credits include Pustina, Aranyélet, Umbre, Blinded by the Lights, Uspjeh, The Sleepers, Gösta, Beforeigners, Patria, Beartown and 30 Coins. He will share his vision of the sector and tell us how he works with European talent on a daily basis. Specifically, he will look at the example of the recent Foodie Love (Spain) and The Sleepers (Czech Republic).

Charité Royale Discussions Professionals only

With EPC (European Producers Club)

The independent sector has never been so lively in terms of TV drama, thanks to the growth in the demand, and in particular to the success of the streamers in European local market.

Commissioning TV Drama is flowing, occupying all aspects in the industry. This is the good news that everyone can read in the newspaper. But does it correspond to the reality?

Actually there is a hidden reverse of the medal: the contractual conditions proposed by the streamers are not spreading so much happiness… not only for producers but also directors and actors.

The US streamers are here to stay and we are happy about it, and we are all willing to have a show commissioned, but not at any price.

But how can you negotiate with these powerful giants when you are an independent ? What is your bargaining power? What are the solutions the industry is setting up to protect the independent sector? And what role can the regulators play there?

To discuss these new ways of working together at creating ambitious TV Series, whilst preserving the European savoir faire, directors, authors and producers, all representing the European independent sector will share their views in Fontainebleau at the occasion of an exclusive conference, organised by the European Producers Club with the participation of the Federation of European Screen Directors.

Charité Royale Discussions Open to the public

Before appearing on our screens, a series is the result of a long process of collective creation. In his book Créer une série (creating a series), Pierre Langlais recounts each episode in the life of a series, from the first spark to the broadcast of the final season, through the eyes and testimonies of its authors. Intimate confidences and production secrets that shed light on their inspiration, their research, their pleasure in writing, their routine, their joys and disappointments.

This meeting will bring together several of the creators who participated in the book. During a discussion chaired by Cathy Verney (Vernon Subutex, Hard) and Pierre Langlais, they'll dialogue and intersect their experiences in an even more lively immersion behind the scenes of the origin of a series.

This fearless, frank and provocative series explores the question of sexual consent in contemporary life and how, in our modern landscape of dating and relationships, we make the distinction between liberation and exploitation. Following triumph from a piece of writing that garnered internet acclaim, Arabella (Coel) - easily distracted, non-committal and carefree - finds herself feted as the ‘voice of her generation’, with an agent, a book commission and a helluva lot of pressure. After being sexually assaulted in a nightclub, her life changes irreversibly and Arabella is forced to reassess everything: her career, her friends, even her family. As Arabella struggles to come to terms with what has happened, she begins a journey of self-discovery.
