As war overturns her country, Ukrainian producer Kateryna Vyshnevska has invited Maria Feldman, Israeli-American producer of Ukrainian origin, to discuss their views on the impact of war and adversity on creation.
How to conceive the future for Ukrainian creators and audiovisual industry, and what can come out of the crisis? Do war and adversity foster creativity? Israel has long established itself as a hotbed of creativity. So what does it mean for Ukraine? As the war forces the industry and people to reinvent themselves, what does it mean for all of us?
BBC Media Action, the charity and international development arm of the British pubcaster, works in partnership with local media and development organisations around the world, seeking to promote social change, improve education and healthcare, and support human rights in developing countries, convening the communication and media (for) development, social and behavioural change through a social networking and shared knowledge strategy.
Ellie Haworth, Head of projects for BBC Media Action, and Sevda Shishmanova, Bulgarian director, former journalist and Head of drama at BNT, will exchange their views on their experience in the Eastern European context and illustrate how drama can be a force for good with concrete examples. Among other relevant projects, they will notably look back at the 5baksiv.net series which targeted young audiences in Ukraine in the context of the war in Dombass, seeking to address the problems they were facing, in particular hate speech and the polarisation of society, and aiming to support the country in dealing with tensions and divisions exacerbated by the war.
Ellie and Sevda will concretely illustrate how TV drama can create a safe space to address complex societal issues and dilemmas. They will dive into a softer approach, ideally based upon research, implying translated, nuanced and realistic images and discourse, and encouraging critical thinking.

Four Mothers is the incredible true story of a women’s movement that ended a war. It is the beginning of the anti-war movement “Four Mothers” that led a groundbreaking civil fight, inspired masses and ultimately changed the course of history in the Middle east.

Adam Kay is an award-winning writer and comedian. His debut book, This is Going to Hurt, a memoir inspired by his years as a junior doctor, offers a vital, witty yet dark and often shocking depiction of the National Health Service in the UK. Recently adapted into a series, with Adam serving as writer, and co-executive producer with Jane Featherstone and Naomi de Pear for SISTER and James Farrell for Terrible Productions, the piece is a perfect illustration of how the distinctive vision and voice of an artist can raise awareness in a powerful manner.
This is Going to Hurt is a literary sensation: a Sunday Times number one bestseller for over a year, it has sold over 2.5 million copies, making it the bestselling UK narrative non-fiction book of the 21st Century. Translated into 37 languages, This is Going to Hurt has won ten national awards including a record-breaking four National Book Awards. Adam’s bestselling follow-up, Twas The Nightshift Before Christmas, and two children’s books Kay’s Anatomy and Kay’s Marvellous Medicine also broke records in their respective genres. His anthology Dear NHS raised over £500,000 for charity.
After serving as writer and executive producer on the TV adaptation of This is Going to Hurt for AMC+ and the BBC, Adam is currently showrunning a major new comedy-drama. He lives in Oxfordshire, England with his dog and husband (two separate individuals).
Adam will do us the honour of sharing his committed and distinctive creative vision with us: a powerful take on the question “Can drama be a force for good?”.

Alice is a formidable PA, single mother, and lifelong Madonna fan. Cheryl is a bestselling fantasy author who, recently bereaved, lives alone with her toy poodle, Goblin. Rob is an eccentric & celebrated ecopreneur… who may or may not be trying to destroy them both.
This is a story about lies & artifice, about our weakness for self-deception, and about the rapid ascent of the modern fraudster. Why do ‘respectable’ psychopaths rise to the top? Why does a posh man in a suit seem so plausible compared to a working-class single mum in a pink plastic rain mac? And if you can’t beat them, is joining them really so bad?
Above all, this is also the story of an unexpected friendship between two very different women and the power they’ll discover if they can make their voices heard...

By exposing the troubles of our society, by bringing all the marginalised out of the shadows, crime thriller is a public service. Often a militant act, with dark sincerity, it creates works with a unique atmosphere. Its great diversity and uncompromising reflection of our civilisations undoubtedly make crime drama the most relevant way of understanding the world.

This is the story of Eva Perón after her death.
Evita's embalmed body had an eventful journey that lasted 22 years and it was as eventful as her 33 years of life. Evita died in 1952 but her corpse remained waiting three years to be buried in a monument that was never erected. In 1955 a military coup overthrew Perón and hid the body for 19 years to prevent it from becoming a weapon against the regime. A political figure for six years as General Peron's wife, yet her corpse influenced Argentine politics for more than two decades, fabricating a strange story, becoming part of the Argentine mythology. To the military officers that took over, dead Evita was even more dangerous than the alive one. Everyone feared that errant corpse without a burial site.
This is the story of that corpse without a grave and its legend.

French Fuse aka Jerry & Ben met in 2008 at the Institut Musical de Formation Professionnelle (IMFP), a jazz and contemporary music school. Jerry plays the piano and Benjamin the trombone. In 2011, they passed the entrance exam for the Aix en Provence conservatoire and began to meet to write songs: "We wanted to create without a cerebral approach. The first tracks we posted on Youtube had no particular intention! We wanted to make music for the general public, more intuitive". The group posted a first video and, in view of its success on the platform, the two musicians decided to set up the duo French Fuse. In just a few months, the project took off. Innovative, popular, heady and playful, they invented a sort of soundtrack to our imagination, a pop digest of consumer society. They signed with Universal Music, Alex Lutz invited them to play at the 28th Nuit des Molières and then they went on tour in festivals throughout Europe.
Currently, French Fuse has over 120 million views.

In recent years, European fiction has often attempted - with success - to transcribe and document real events. Without ever trying to replace journalistic objectivity or documentary insights, creators offer an alternative, human and subjective prism on these real events.
We know the role that emotion and identification play in raising awareness on contemporary issues. Fiction, better than any other genre, can play these assets in all sincerity. But beyond individual awareness, can it help us move forward as a group? Can fiction help us overcome our trauma by diving back into painful memories?
This is the challenge taken up by the creators of the Belgian series Lost Luggage, who chose to set their series in the context of the Brussels airport attacks. Through the eyes of their heroine, they were able to weave a web of individual and fictional stories into a great collective narrative with a very real resonance. A deeply European story, through which they will try to answer the question: can fiction heal wounded souls?
Speakers : Nathalie Basteyns, Tiny Bertels and Ivy Vanhaecke (Lost Luggage)
In charge of the French private channel's fiction department since 2018, Anne Viau has established a strong vision and an editorial line which she will share during this session centered on Série Series 2022’s topical theme, "Can drama be a force for good?". At a time when the audience is more than ever in the need for comfort, how does TF1 build a feel-good, positive, yet ambitious fiction line up, with notorious protagonists, emblematic characters and highly anticipated mini-series? How do TF1 dramas answer a complex and all too often gloomy societal context? What is the positioning of its editorial team and what in what direction are the current developments going?
Anne Viau will share her optimistic vision during a 20-minute presentation.
After its sensational arrival on the French TV scene with the Oussekine series a few weeks ago, the Disney+ platform is being scrutinised by creators who see it as an exciting space for artistic expression. Pauline Dauvin, its vice-president in charge of original content, will come and present their organisation and their policy revolving around creators, and share her vision and expectations for a booming sector. As she is convinced that local production is essential to anchor the brand in France, her ambition is to increase the amount of original content available, with a strong determination towards strong and distinctive original works, and to allow creators to fully express their voice. Pauline Dauvin will not fail to mention her commitment to a fiction that can be "a force for good", as promoted by this season of Série Series, discussion her ambition to represent the full diversity of our society, in front of or behind the camera.

Pauline Dauvin (Disney+ France), Mariana Perez and Leonardo Aranguibel (Disney+ LatAm) will exchange their views on how drama can be a force for good during a 20 to 30-minute discussion based on the recent series they commissioned.
Oussekine and Santa Evita are two ambitious series based on real and recent facts from France and Argentina. Both rely on strong and meaningful stories, anchored in national History. Both of those stories give the audience an occasion to dive into our society and tackle essential subjects such as racism, politics, the relation to the female body, the position of women in society, etc. Though entertaining, those series are deep and fundamental and provide us with a strong vision on our current world.
Do the three commissioners work with something like a sense of responsibility towards society and the audience in mind? Why did they choose to host such stories on their platform? What was their point regarding facts and the relation to History while working with the authors? What do they think of the power of reality and fiction? All those questions will be addressed by the three visionary speakers.

With committed thrillers addressing deeply contemporary themes - extremism, immigration, secularism, social injustice, the emergence of a deadly virus... - Diniz Galhos (translator and writer) and Fabrice Jambois (novelist) offer two very different storytellings and stylistic approaches, which share their originality and their obvious visual evocations. Two illustrations of fiction for a better world.
SPAIN
When her school’s year-end trip to Italy is canceled, Alba’s (Naira Lleó) dream of escaping her troubled life – and the shady dealings her brother is always roping her into – seems next to impossible. But after discovering that some of her classmates are secretly planning an epic road trip, Alba does everything she can to secure a spot in their van. Guided by only three rules – no posting to social media, always stay together, and let fate decide their destination – the teenagers hit the road for a wild adventure, discovering more about themselves, one another, and the joys (and consequences) of freedom with every mile.

For authors, getting their rights recognised or finding solutions to conflicts or disagreements can be a difficult task. However, there is no shortage of structures dedicated to their defence: SACD, AMAPA, trade unions and professional organisations, etc. All too often authors get discouraged and give up on their defence. How, then, can we simplify the path to better protection for authors? What recourses exist? What are the pitfalls to avoid? How can practices be made to evolve in a more virtuous direction? Initiated by the SACD, this meeting will provide answers to help authors see clearly and assert their rights.
Discussion with representatives of the SACD, the AMAPA, the French Screenwriters Guild and the U2R.
As a long-standing partner of the festival, Banque Palatine is joining forces with Série Series to launch the Palatine x Série Series - GLORIA Prize. The prize will be awarded to a French drama series project that has an ambitious approach to the representation of women, at the heart of the creative process and/or via the subject matter of the work.
The Prize is intended to reward and encourage a drama series project by one or more women and/or one that highlights the accomplishments of one or more women in society or more particularly in fields such as society, sports, music, literature or science.
Banque Palatine will offer €5,000 to the winner.
Since its inception, Série Series has never ceased to promote and back independent, high quality European pieces and to give a voice to the creators who work on them. It is therefore only logical that this prize should be awarded to the writer(s)/producer duo behind the project, and that the prize money should be given to them in equal parts.

The series is based on Adam Kay’s award-winning international multi-million selling memoir of the same name. Blisteringly funny and frequently heartbreaking, This Is Going To Hurt is a stark reminder of the vital role played by the NHS.
At times hilarious, at times devastating, it follows Adam, a doctor working in obstetrics and gynaecology who we find wending his way through the ranks of hospital hierarchy, junior enough to suffer the crippling hours, but senior enough to face a constant barrage of terrifying responsibilities: the 97-hour weeks, the life-and-death decisions, and all the while knowing the hospital parking meter is earning more than him.

As Zoé has regained her position of Étoile and Flora has passed the entrance exam of the company, a new season begins at the Opera. Since Sébastien left, the company no longer has a Dance Director. It is in this chaotic atmosphere that a new Maîtresse de Ballet arrives: Diane Taillandier. This former Étoile, a true ballet legend, enforces drastic methods. Between emotional blackmail and psychological manipulation, Diane does not back down from anything in order to establish her authority. And Zoé, just like Flora, will have to pay the price.
This new season tells the story of two mutations: a dancer’s, Zoé, and an institution’s. In both cases, it will be a matter of moving on from the past, of accepting one's flaws and faults, in order to better reinvent oneself.
