Open to public Lieu : Théâtre municipalAll detail

In 2012, TV viewers across the world watched 3 hours and 17 minutes of television a day, that is one minute more than in 2011. This increasing television viewing comes down to, amongst other things, fiction programmes which, in 2012, represented nearly 40% of international list of hits, of which a large majority were series. Original creations, local adaptations or international coproductions contribute towards the standing of European fiction programmes which are taking on a new dimension in the international marketplace. Eurodata TV Worldwide will present the markets behind this revival, viewing trends and emblematic titles of an offer becoming richer and richer, available on all types of media supports.

2.30 - 3.00 pmEURODATA : the new order of creation market

Open to public Lieu : Théâtre municipalAll detail

Over these last few months, newcomers such as  Netflix, Amazon or Hulu have clearly changed the order in terms of supply, but also in terms of methods. Never has the competition been fiercer, the need to stand out from the crowd as strong, inventiveness as stimulated. This intensified competitiveness is conducive towards a creative brimming over, particularly where fiction programmes are concerned. Traditional television is oriented  towards high-standard, more original series, carried off by famous names and digital strategies, and daring a certain risk-taking which often pays off amongst viewers. An analysis in terms of figures and pictures is offered by Eurodata TV Worldwide.

2.30 - 4.00 pmThe sound of series

Open to public Lieu : Château de FontainebleauAll detail

in partnership with

In line with its multidisciplinary approach, Série Séries wants to produce a debate on series’ sound. The aim is to show and share the nature of this often little known post-production expertise. Who are the main players here? How do composers, producers, sound-effects engineer, mixers and editors (sound and image), work together? Are there major differences in the way teams operate according to national context? Are some countries more sophisticated than others on this (the well known “gap” between the USA and others)? Here are the issues that contributors will address, trying to illustrate the technical, financial and artistic hurdles and opportunities of sound production that remains key to make a successful serie.

Intervenants :

- Christophe LA PINTA, composer

- Mikael BRODIN, sound designer

- Emmanuèle LABBE, editor

- Muriel DELCAYRE, head of post-production

- Bruno Mercère, sound mixer

- Jean Lionel Etcheverry, sound technician, Digimage

3.00 - 4.30 pmA TALK WITH...

Open to public Lieu : Théâtre municipalAll detail

This year, Série Séries  creates special moments for the participants – out of the box personalities will share their experience and views on major political, economic and social issues. Format will be short punchy and refreshing.

Nicolas Colin, co-author of L’âge de la multitude

The audiovisual industry after the digital revolution

Nicolas Colin explores how the « multitude », which refers to the masses but also to each of us individually, is rapidly becoming a major player in the value creation’s process thanks to the digital revolution. Such a revolution had already taken place, but the digitizing of the economic and social fabric is still to come, by the dissemination of new economic and industrial models. This is also true for culture. Based on his experience in the music sector as rapporteur of the Zelnik mission, Nicolas Colin will share with the Festival’s audience his views on the impact of such a major economic and social rupture on audiovisual creation.

John Yorke, managing director, Company Pictures

What makes a successful drama series

What do the top 25 UK and American drama series of all time have in common? What are the key elements that underpin successful drama series ever made? Jonh Yorke, Managing director of Company Pictures (“Wild at heart”, “Skins”), will share his 20 years of experience which includes the commissioning of such shows as “Life on Mars” as BBC’s vision’s Controller of Drama Production and New Talent, as well as his roles as Head of Drama for Channel 4, where he commissioned “Shameless”, and founder and manager of the Writers Academy, developing new writing talent for both the BBC and the wider UK television drama industry.

Formats: a new perspective for the development of series creation

The Club Galilée, “think tank” on media, prefigures the creation of an “incubator” dedicated to the creation of “formats” in France. It is an initiative from the Ministries of Finance and Productive Development (Ministère du développement productif) and from the actors of the audiovisual and digital industries.

This “incubator” aims at all the authors and producers. Indeed, the “format” speaks to all TV genres. And particularly drama. This explains why Club Galilée is present with this initiative at Série Series festival on its second edition.

The producers who have joined this initiative as of today show the example in terms of formats in the series area.

Braunschlag starts to flourish, but the two hard-drinking men soon lose control. Somewhere between the delusions of the locals, pressure from the state capital, intractable marital problems and the Vatican, the situation escalates more and more - and the miracle of Braunschlag is becoming a nightmare fast.

Utopia is a legend. A cult graphic novel rumoured to have predicted the worst disasters of the late twentieth century. Dismissed as the fevered imagining of a madman by most, and idolized by a handful, only one thing seems cerain about Utopia: come into contact with it and you won’t be safe for long.

Penned by the acclaimed Dennis Kelly and brought to life in genre-bending technicolour by director Marc Munden, Utopia is brutal, tense and darkly comic. What if the conspiracy nuts are right? What if there really are people trying to control our lives, doctor our food, experiment upon us, kill us? And more terrifyingly, what if they are right?

2.00 - 3.30 pmScreening and Case Study Una Mamma Imperfetta (Italy)

Open to public Lieu : Cinéma ErmitageAll detail

“Une Mamma imperfetta” is an original example of a series developed for the web (corriere.tv) and coproduced by a broadcaster (RAI). It is a unique transmedia experiment as the series is produced according to the “traditional” audiovisual methods and not according to the web’s economic norms.

“Well. Then. My name is Chiara Guerrieri, I’m thirty nine years old, I live in Rome, I have a husband, two children, a job that I like, a home”. Every day, in eight minutes, Chiara tells us about her day.
The diary, from Monday to Friday, follows the character’s weekly schedule: a cappuccino with her girl-friends after having taken the children to school, the meetings at work, the football five games played by her son, … the effort to keep an over ten-year old love alive …. Many, too many things to keep her from being constantly late.
Every day Chiara turns to her audience and offers an ironic look at her life, asking questions which concern all of us. How can one be a good mother, a dutiful wife and a fulfilled woman who keeps her job without totally losing her way?
